Do’s and Don’ts

The short version

Please do

  • Sanitise your hands at the ward entrance, going in and coming out
  • Keep your visit short — rest is part of the treatment
  • Nominate one family member to speak with the doctor, and let them pass on the update
  • Keep phones on silent and conversations low
  • Ask the nurse before giving the patient food, water or any medicine from home
  • Carry your visitor pass and show it when asked
  • Tell staff immediately if the patient seems worse
  • Use the bins provided and keep the bedside clear for the nursing staff

Please do not

  • Visit if you have fever, cough, cold or loose motions
  • Bring children under 12 into the wards or ICU
  • Sit or lie on the patient's bed
  • Touch drips, monitors, oxygen tubing or any equipment
  • Photograph or film other patients, their files, or staff
  • Bring flowers or plants into the ICU
  • Smoke, chew tobacco or consume alcohol anywhere on the campus
  • Argue with or raise a hand to staff — this is a police matter and we will treat it as one
Infection Prevention

Why we are strict about who comes in.

Many of our patients are recovering from surgery, are on ventilators or have low immunity. An infection that would give you a mild cold for two days can put them back in intensive care. That is the whole reason behind every rule on this page.

  • Do not visit while unwell. Fever, cough, cold, sore throat, loose motions, rash or a recent contact with an infectious illness — please postpone and call instead.
  • Wear a mask in the ICU and newborn unit, and anywhere staff ask you to. Masks are available at the reception.
  • Clean your hands with the sanitiser at every ward entrance — before and after touching the patient.
  • Follow isolation signs on a room door. If a room is marked, ask the nurse what precautions apply before entering.
  • Do not share the patient's towel, glass, spoon or bedding.
During an outbreak In a COVID-19, influenza or other outbreak, visiting may be reduced to one attendant or suspended entirely, and masks become compulsory across the hospital. Notices go up at the entrance and our staff will tell you at the gate — please do not argue with them over it.

For the Attendant

If you are staying with a patient

Carry your pass

One attendant pass is issued at admission. Keep it with you — security will ask for it, particularly at night.

One spokesperson

Nominate a single family member to receive updates from the doctor. It prevents mixed messages and lets the team get back to the patient.

Daily doctor briefing

For ICU patients the treating doctor briefs the family once a day at a fixed time. Ask the nurse what time it is on your floor.

Meals

The patient's diet is planned by us — please check before bringing food. Attendant meals can be added to your bill or bought at the canteen.

Valuables

Do not keep money, jewellery or phones unattended at the bedside. The hospital cannot take responsibility for personal belongings.

Bills and formalities

Interim bills can be seen at the billing counter any time. Keep the admission file and all receipts together in one folder.

General hospital rules

  • No smoking, tobacco or alcohol anywhere on the campus, including the parking area. This is a statutory requirement, not a house rule.
  • Fire exits and corridors must stay clear. Do not sit or place belongings in stairwells or in front of exits.
  • Photography and filming of other patients, their records or staff is not permitted. You may photograph your own family member.
  • Parking is on site with a covered drop-off. Please keep the ambulance bay and the emergency porch free at all times.
  • Lost property should be reported at the reception. The hospital does not accept liability for personal belongings.
  • Abuse of staff — verbal or physical — is treated as a police matter. Our team is here to help you, and they are entitled to work safely.
  • Complaints should go to the nurse in charge first, then the floor manager, then the patient relations desk. Everything is answered in writing within seven working days.
